Kris Allen and Adam Lambert's new singles and albums. We could track them here.
Do we like them?
How are they doing on the radio?
How are they selling?
What do you guys think? I thought this would be a good spot for discussion on the new Idols from this year. You can add Allison if you like.

Yeah Adam needs a top notch band. His first show is the AMA's . I think someone said that Monte Pittman was also in AL's "band" Citizen Kane. I don't know anything about it just the name and that they were a band up until AL went on AI.
For those interested in Adam's band, per his fans: On keys is Lisa Harrington - from Smashing Pumpkins. Monte Pittman is Madonna's bassist. Longineu is Yellowcard drummer. Not sure who the other guy is - name is Tommy Joe. Sounds assembled, but pretty impressive credits. Their band photo look very goth.
Adam also mentioned in a recent article that he's only going to get to tour if the album sells well enough to make touring viable.
I assumed he was automatically going out on tour since he now has a band. I had no idea it wasn't a definite. I wonder if he picked the band members or were they picked for him? If he does tour, it will be very interesting to see the box office totals.
Partly Cloudy
What in the world else would Adam do if not tour? Granted, not 146 stops but....
I'll take a stab. Maybe he'd just have to base himself in LA and work the club scene, and try to get booked on as many TV shows as possible? Or more movie soundtracks? And get himself in all the gossip rags?
I don't know how David could have followed any other route. He's a rock artist with a rock band. They tour.
Not to put words in leastlikely's mouth, but I think she means the extreme front-end expense for celebrity PR which would put touring extensively in jeopardy.
Excellent point. Adam also mentioned in a recent article that he's only going to get to tour if the album sells well enough to make touring viable. This high cost, high visibility roll out it is a very, very high risk (potentially high reward) strategy for him personally and he's got to be feeling a ton of pressure.

I mean, I suppose he could become a Vegas act, go to Broadway, get an acting role? But, none of that is the best way to sell albums ... unless you're on Glee.
I'm actually very glad David chose not to go this route.

Hey, thanks for this thread.
The S8 roll out is interesting to watch and this seems the safest place to read. The next week will get a bit crazy and I think the entertainment media likes the circus-approach rather than talking about the music / grassroots approach.
As for Ian Pirie as part of Dave's management, it is printed at the back of DCTR:
" Management: Simon Fuller and Iain Pirie; 19 Entertainment"
The screen shot of vibe- raters last year showing Dave's management was posted in the Pinoy forums, #495:

I hope that helps.
Sorry....wrong thread.

The thing with RCA spending so much money on Adam is that it doesn't come from a magical pot of infinite money. The money has to come from somewhere and has to be paid back somehow. Remember Adam has to deal with recoupment just like any other artist. He is going to have to sell big to pay for all the choreographers, wardrobe and paid promotion. Its not all free money to throw at him. Adam has a budget just like every other artist.

I'm in the camp that David had a lot to say in how his roll out was handled last year, and what we're seeing this year with Adam would be that last thing he would have wanted. It's a celebrity/pop star roll out, not a musician/artist roll out. Dave was pretty clear about wanting to get back to his roots, play small shows, work his way up and establish his credibility. Given the kind of artist he is and everything else he had going on at the time, I think that was a very wise call on his part.

He was, yes. But the press release did not refer to him as Dave's manager. Not sure what that means, if anything.
ETA: As far as the AMA and NYE shows are concerned, again it's apples and oranges to me. These shows are looking for glitzy acts with dancing and lights and pyro and all the spectacle that is needed for TV shows of that nature. That's Adam to a T. It's not Kris and, really, it's not Dave either. He doesn't dance, remember?
Also AL has proven to be someone one not afraid to put everything out there. In this celebrity culture sex and scandalous stories sell.
That doesn't seem to be helping him out that much. I had to laugh at the Billboard headline that said that Kris and Adam were going to convert TV watchers into music buyers . . . at a time when the ratings were historically low for Idol. There's a variety of factors involved there, but those factors also affect the music business and tend to indicate that there won't be records broken this year.
There was an interesting figure on that blog we won't name. It stated that Norah Jones was #1 on Amazon for 3 months for her 2007 album and sold 30,000 albums from that. Adam was #1 for the better part of a week, but even if the rumors are true I expect he sold far less on that retailer than Ms. Jones.
Actually I don't think RCA is involved in any of the promo that is happening at this time. I think most if not all of this promo has been set up by 19. Obviously I think AL garnered a lot of the print media all on his own due to reasons discussed already. But so far I think what RCA has shelled out is press releases regarding the album, his official site, his studio time, writers, producers, studio musicians, CD photos and design, radio adds, (have there been any?) call out survey's and the video. That is a lot of stuff but I don't confuse it with Promo. At this point management and publicists are the people creating the buzz. Which we all now 19E are brilliant at. I think RCA is more than happy to sit back and see what kind of boost all the promo will generate.
Also AL has proven to be someone one not afraid to put everything out there. In this celebrity culture sex and scandalous stories sell. Unfortunately the music industry is not just about music all the time.
Rose C, you have not heard any of Adam's songs because none of them are charting, or even really getting much play, on any format. And this is what I think ultimately will be the problem. The shiny hype and promo will die out after the holiday and then what? He better hope he's charting well to keep his album afloat.
I'm not comparing what Adam gets with David. Adam is dropping an album, David is not. When David gets ready to drop his next album we'll see what promo he gets. And dropping in the summer should help since he hopefully won't have to compete with a dozen of the biggest names on radio in such a hectic time frame as November. Also the idol franchise became rejuvenated because of David and Archie, so increased opportunities and exposure were created for the future. We didn't have bloggers like Slezak and Cantiello writing an article every 5 minutes like they are now. But so far the sales of season 7 are not there. It is all cyclical, and it will come out eventually.

I have a son that is gay and a performer...and I do get it why AL did not want to make his sexuality an issue during the show.
I didn't care one way or the other how he presented himself on the show, but he's certainly using it now.
And I do have to admit that I get it why AL is in the news, going to be interviewed by Babs and all that is to come. He is controversial because he has come out as being gay which in itself is a big deal (unfortunately), and after doing so, was called out for not being gay enough. Hopefully the day will come where this is not an issue and it is all about talent and the music.
I would agree with this IF Adam had been at all secretive about his sexuality. But, his being gay was all over the internet and it was a barely kept OPEN secret on American Idol. In fact, rather than a secret, it was just not addressed in a straightforward way ... pardon the pun.
So, the whole "coming out" after Idol ended seemed so bogus to me. It was like they were cynically taking advantage of his sexual orientation to make a splash and get press, rather than because it was some revelation about himself that Adam had to get off his chest in order for him to live an honest life. It was just so staged and cynical. He -- and 19E/RCA -- used it, point blank, to promote Adam.
"Hopefully the day will come where this is not an issue and it is all about talent and the music."
Hopefully. In the meantime, I thought that at least Billboard, if not being about talent, might at least be about actual radio play and sales.

Yeah, Adam is clearly diving fully into the celebrity game, showing up at all the parties, shmoozing with the 'right' people, and it's paying big dividends right now. He shoots for OTT in everything he does, from his look and music to his show which sounds like it will be quite the extravaganza. And the glitz and glamour draws the media in like flys - it's big, it's gorgeous, it makes great copy.
What I find interesting is that Adam keeps on saying its all about the music. I don't buy it. I think its all about the image and the show. I think the music takes a back seat to the glitter and the rouge' (tm Jackson Browne). What I'm curious to see is if they manage to sell Adam's image so successfully that radio starts playing his stuff and people start buying his music. I know he wants to put on a huge spectacle tour but he'll need some big numbers coming in soon to get that off the ground. I'm ready with popcorn and the requisite nutritional yeast sprinkled on top.
Adam's musical success seems to be contingent on his personal life and celebrity status
Yes. Will be interesting to see if that can translate into record sales.
I hope we don't take every booking of Adam's as a slight against David - they are completely different animals and Adam's musical success seems to be contingent on his personal life and celebrity status, which is something I don't think David is willing to do. I personaly prefer David's rollout as a hardworking, great live singer/songwriter - as long as he gets enough buzz to keep putting out high quality albums, whatever they are doing works for me.
Hi everyone, been reading this thread since it's inception and have enjoyed all the different opinions. For me, up until today I've been rather neutral regarding AL, but after reading tonight that he is closing out the AMA show and he's one of Barbara Walters 10 most fascinating people, I can't help but be a little angry. They stuck David on that stupid FOX NYE program and Adam gets Dick Clarks NYE show with Ryan? I've heard Kris's single twice on the radio so far. Haven't heard any of AL's 3 singles yet. I'm in the Philly/South Jersey market.
I have been trying to post here in as neutral of a tone as possible regarding AL and have gone back a couple of times to edit posts that thought were maybe a bit on the negative side,but from here on it is a great big wtf from me. I do wonder if some of this publicity got lined up before the single(s) were released and the media jumped on board thinking there was going to be a tidal wave of excitement for him. What we actually have is a tidal wave of controversy instead of a big hit on the radio. Maybe now the media is hoping this controversy will sell magazines, newspapers and bring in TV viewers. The AI season ended for me ambivilant to either Adam or Kris, but wished them both well. I now find myself turned off to all things AL...and wonder if there are more people like me, or will he end up with more fans than before.
I had to laugh at the Billboard article PC linked to. They brag about Time for Miracles selling 68k and FYE selling 18k as if those are huge amounts.
There's a ton of spin in that article. Does Billboard do puff pieces like this often? I thought they had credibility. I love how they totally ignore that the success of 2012 hasn't really done anything for the song.
It will be interesting to see if WWFM picks up any adds on Tuesday. Kris has picked up a Canadian Hot AC add and an extra HAC add, while Adam got another CA Hot AC add and a CA Top 40 add. So far they're moving up, but are far away from charting: LLWD is #119 on CA HAC, whereas FYE is #83 on HAC and #191 on CA Top 40.
ETA: I've been reading some of the reviews of Adam's album. They are pretty much proceeding down Idol fanlines. Adam gets raves: Kris gets "nice try, but you're just not good enough". If Adam gets a MetaCritic listing, I fully expect his score to be in the 90s, something reserved for indie artists or veterans.
That was weird, Cathy.
I mean, isn't Billboard read by people who can read a chart? And follow radio? And have some idea how . . . not present AL is on either? Aren't they going to go . . . um?
But in a desperate time for print mags, it's hard to resist trying to cash in on what's assumed to be a big Idol fan rush.

Here's the Adds page for WWFM, since it seems like it's getting some radio attention:

I had to laugh at the Billboard article PC linked to. They brag about Time for Miracles selling 68k and FYE selling 18k as if those are huge amounts. The next couple of weeks are going to be very popcorn worthy. I just don't get what Adam has done that deserves this much attention. I guess we'll find out next week if he actually has massive preorders, or if it's all just hype. Who knows, maybe he will explode after the AMAs.I may have to stop reading stories about AI if he does though. I just don't find him all that exciting or amazing.

This from a Chris Sligh tweet (Just heard @DannyGokey 's actual first single - so glad they're not going with "It's Only". I think this new one has a chance for success). Looks like they're switching his single too. Is there enough popcorn for this year?
ETA: As far as the ever increasing over-hype, I think they've go so much invested now, that they'll do whatever they think it will take for him to be successful. "In for penny (million) in for a pound (whatever?)" effect.

He is still the darling of the press but how long will that last if he does not sell and his song is not played?
Well, given the promotional opportunities coming up, I guess 19 is going to throw money at the problem until they go bankrupt.
(Seriously, these two on the cover of Billboard? Please. Not gonna mention the other stuff but it's getting way out of hand. Not like it wasn't already).
WHTZ played WWFM 6 times yesterday. I thought that was a lot (and it probably is, given the circumstances), but they played Britney's 3 15 times (and they weren't even the worst offenders: one station played that song 20 times throughout the day! BTW, Windy is still being played 6 times or more on 4 HAC stations). A couple of other stations have jumped onboard, including KIIS, but the piggyback effect hasn't quite jumped in like I would expect. It has moved up to #84 on the Top 40 chart.
Otherwise, Alison and FYE continue to move slowly. LLWD is doing a little better, but the progress is still pretty slow.
ETA: The fact that Alison has the vocal cops of a rock singer is exactly what the issue is. Her voice is too mature for the teenybopper stuff she's doing. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of options for someone like her right now as far as getting out there right away. Which is why she'd be better suited to working on her craft within the context of a band. Even if she explodes, she's going to have the same problems Kelly Clarkson does.
Mileage obviously varies because I don't think Adam is telegenic at all. He's a Joke. All his OVER hype didn't win him AI. Didn't give him itunes numbers to beat DC's, didn't give him singles that soar. If it takes that much press and over the top hype to sell him, then they better hope they put him on TV every day. At which point I'll never watch again, unless DC is on. ::shakes head in disgust::
And I agree with whoever said that Allyson has more raw talent and I think she could go far. In time.

Adam's single is loosing spins on top 40 and HAC. (FYI) The "new" single written by Pink has gained a few spins last couple of days but nothing earth shattering. It is very odd. He is still the darling of the press but how long will that last if he does not sell and his song is not played?
Well, based upon this article some people are speculating that he's actually closing the AMAs. He also is supposedly performing on the Dick Clark New Years Show with Ryan Seacrest and he's being interviewed as one of 2009's Most Fascinating, so -- seriously -- something better give with him.
http://www.billboard.com/#/features/adam-lambert-the-billboard-cover-sto...
He means that literally-"Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve With Ryan Seacrest" is one of the TV appearances lined up for Lambert in the coming months; the campaign starts Nov. 22 with his show-closing performance at the American Music Awards. Besides the typical rounds of morning and late-night talk shows, Lambert will be interviewed as one of the "Most Fascinating People" of 2009. "Adam is so telegenic. It's going to be a visual launch," Corson says.

I guess mileage truly varies coz I just saw Alison's acoustic performance of Don't Waste The Pretty and thought of dropping a quick post here about it - i love this girl. Terrific tone, control, expression, the only downside might be her enunciation - although if you think of the disctinctive enunciations of Jagger / Dylan / Axl Rose et al, you might say that expression beats enunciation in music any day. I hope they do right by her. Her potential is hyooooge. I think she has more raw talent and originality than any of the boys hyped up in her season.

It looks like Kris should at least land in the Top 10, which is about all I hoped for with this crowded debut week. Kris also has a big front page add at HDD.
http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi
YOUR WEAKEND TOP 12 CHART PREVIEW: John Mayer should easily top next week's album chart with a total kissin’ close to that of his last studio effort in 2006. Lest we forget, boys and girls, that's something to brag about these days. Andrea Bocelli will likely be the #2 album next week, as his Christmas release continues to pick up steam. The rest of the Top 5 could land in any order, as Norah Jones, 50 Cent and Casting Crowns all look to land in about the same area code. But given that this is the weekend before Thanksgiving, don't fall out of your chair if sales pick up and make it a race for #2 on Monday. But that’s three days away…
* John Mayer (Columbia) 290-315k
Andrea Bocelli (Decca) 190-200k
* Norah Jones (Blue Note) 150-160k
* 50 Cent (Aftermath/Interscope) 140-150k
* Casting Crowns (Provident/Reunion) 140-150k
* Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 110-120k
Michael Jackson's This Is It (Epic) 95-105k
Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 90-100k
* Kris Allen (19/RCA/RMG) 85-90k
Taylor Swift Fearless (Big Machine) 85-90k
Twilight Saga: New Moon (Chop Shop/Atlantic) 75-80k
* Them Crooked Vultures (Interscope) 70-75k
* Denotes debut

This roll out for AL has been the craziest thing.
Hmm, I don't think anybody's mentioned Alison's music video, have they?
http://mjsbigblog.com/allison-iraheta-friday-ill-be-over-u-music-video-p...
What I've heard of her so far just reaffirms my conviction that she is not ready for a music career at this stage. She is still singing little-girl songs, but her voice isn't really suited to them. What she needs to do is get away for a few years, work with a band, and then come back with that experience behind her. If she succeeds with this, she might have a difficult time transitioning into an adult artist. I could easily see her career mirroring Carly Smithson's and that might be the best thing for her.
I'll probably pop up with more detailed number information a little later, but Kris continues to move slowly up the Top 40 and HAC charts. FYE continues to move along at Top 40, but has inched to a crawl on HAC. About four stations were playing the "new" single yesterday, but the Z100/WPLJ endorsement (yup, they're playing it, too, although they have switched out one song for the other) hasn't quite spilled over to the rest of the landscape . . . yet. Alison continues to inch along, but she has a few new stations playing her.
More interesting to me right now is that Jordin Sparks's new single has lost its bullet without reaching the Top 30. But that's neither here or there, I guess. I kind of wonder if she's in trouble right now, specially given that she's fallen off the BB 200 (and the song isn't really selling, either).
I've personally always thought of an artist needing radio play more than hype or promotion or appearances to sell their music. To me promo is a nice compliment to radio exposure, but promo alone isn't that substantial. Maybe I put more of a premium on radio play than others but it baffles me that RCA has not gotten a single to chart on the radio for Adam. Yes, it is still possible but time is running dangerously short. So it does look like they are switching singles but WWFM has no adds date on any format. When and how is radio exactly going to make the switch? The holiday freeze is going to start in 2 weeks and there are zero songs going for adds on Hot AC until the new year. It wil be interesting to see how many albums Adam can sell next week and black friday should be a nice boost but what happens the following week when all the hype subsides, all the hardcore fans have bought and all the casual fans picked up a copy at wal mart at 4am? How is the general public going to go out and get it?
I know this thread is mainly for numbers tracking, but I guess if we can discuss Adam's Out interview, this one from Jim Cantiello won't be too far out of place. *smiles* It's a really good one, too. Kris is so relaxed and gives lots of good info about the record:
Mtv News Extended Play: Kris Allen
Maybe you've all seen this elsewhere, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to have it here, too.
ETA: I've also read elsewhere (original TWoP, maybe? I'll go look in a sec), that Jive has arranged for Allison to have clips of 3 songs and a brief blurb from her play before every showing of the new Twilight movie, New Moon! That seems like some pretty awesome promotion, yes?! Here it is:

It's silly, but I would kinda have liked to see Kris beat Jordin's first week (119,000) just to avoid the "lowest" title.
Because KATR is quite a good pop record. For me, for you , No Air was the *only* good song on Jordin's disc--I found Tattoo and One Step at a Time unbearably tedious when they were on the air. While I really dig LLWD and Before We Come Undone.
On the one hand, I would not be surprised to see Kris sell better then expected at stores such as Walmart. On the other, for him to come up with 20,000 more units sold then the upper end of the HDD estimate would be surprising.
Since his roll out has been low-key but overwhelming positive, we'll have to see if those sales even garner much attention outside Idol blogs and columnists. Since the mainstream media have pretty much already run stories about AL being the star of the season--since the season was in progress!-- it might soften that storyline and even garner some "hey this is pretty darn good for the circumstances!" leads for Kris, because it is.
After KA had some really low weeks at the start of LLWD going on sale, I think his fans, anyway, will breathe a sigh of relief at 90,000-100,000. Especially if the song continues on its path to becoming a midrange radio hit. It means he's *not* going to go the way of the Blake Lewis' and Katherine McPhee's who got off to such a bad start they had no hope even of gold. I don't say that cause *my* expectations of Kris were low, but some out there were.

On itunes this morning KATR is # 11 and # 15. It looks like his peak was # 4 for a little while on the day the album dropped. He might come in around 100,000 but he could be as low as 80,000. We will have to see how it shakes out for him. I still believe the highest he can come in from the BB 200 is # 7.
